The Best Resort in Costa Rica: Borinquen Thermal Resort

If you come to Costa Rica you need to stay at Borinquen Thermal Resort.

I could write for days on this place but they aren’t paying me haha, so you will get the cliff notes but I absolutely loved my stay so much I wrote an article just because!

If you only have 2-4 days for non-beach activities and want to stay in the mountains at some point in your trip, which you absolutely need to do, then Borinquen is the perfect place.

I NEVER suggest to stay at a resort but this one is just different and is a must-stay.

Not only is it incredible, it is pretty affordable. No, it is not $100 a night but it also isn’t $300-400+ like you can see at many resorts. Overall the value is great as you get what you pay for and more!

Whether you are a couple looking for romance or a family, it has something for everyone and is one stop shop for everything outdoors & wildlife you need in Costa Rica.

If you read any of my articles on Costa Rica you know I always say the first two places you need to visit are Manuel Antonio and La Fortuna, which you can read top 10 things to do in each on this site!

In fact, can listen to my Costa Rica podcast with this link here or on spotify below.

However, if your trip has you in the Northwest of Costa Rica and you don’t have the time for La Fortuna, then absolutely come here.

Borinquen reminded me of a scaled down version of La Fortuna with .0001% of the people. It is so extremely peaceful and quiet while offering a significant amount of the things you can do in La Fortuna.

We would sit on our patio of our private casita with a glass of wine, the baby had a bottle of milk, and rocked back and forth as two types of parrots, macaws, coatis, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, agoutis and tons of unique birds came by our place.

This resort offers multiple different accommodation types, all of which include being in your own spacious and private casita with a patio overlooking the grounds.

I live in Costa Rica and have never seen so many animals in one day in one place.

I could go on about the grounds but will let the pictures do that. Onsite they have thermal hot springs, a giant pool, three restaurants, mud baths, nature walking paths, spa and a natural steam room.

The spa is stunning with the water sounds being all natural as the stream rolls underneath your room. I even saw monkeys frolicking out the window during my massage!

The entire place is accessible as well as they have their free shuttles that will pick you up from your room and go wherever you need to go on the grounds.

I could go on about the restaurants but they are affordable and the food is amazing.

They also offer a ton of adventure options or you can do like me and just walk to the top of the resort, through the animal gate and go on your own massive hike.

Their adventures are amazing as well though where you can do hikes, horseback riding, unreal canopy tours flying over a gully and waterfall, night tours, rafting and more!

The place is truly so peaceful and we loved it so much we extended our stay an extra day.

I also wanted to give the staff a shoutout with Fran our restaurant host who was one of the best to ever do it as well as a nice woman who was pregnant at the time of our visit in February of 2025.
