Shaft Espresso Shot Recipe

How do you make an alcohol shot with espresso? Well you are in luck for one of the best shot recipes of all time! Espresso, alcohol recipes, drinking things fast… what’s not to love!

The shaft is a legendary Canadian shot that is the best pre-game drink or mid-session pick-me-up. This espresso laden shot is a great drink for people who need a boost of energy during their day or night out.

Move over redbull vodkas, we have a new drink to give everyone a pep without the major crash, jitters and next-day anxiety that the RBVs give. The shaft is a mainstay in western Canada for people needing that extra energy boost for a night out.

Do you need an espresso machine for shafts?

No, you can replace the espresso with coffee, cold brew or using Starbucks espresso shots are the best option! Ideally you do use espresso but if you only have some strong coffee than go with it!

What Alcohol do you use in espresso martinis, shafts & alcohol coffee drinks?

The most common ones are kahlua, irish cream and then using a coffee/espresso tequila or vanilla vodka always go great in these drinks.

Of course you can still make the drink even if you don’t have one of Kahlua or Baileys as it can be versatile for you. Some recipes will even call for a little milk as well, however this article is straight to the goods and not diluting it more than we need to.

There is debate where this shot originated, some say a bar in Alberta, some say Victoria… I say Kamloops, B.C. in little speakeasy with years of history… The Commodore Grand Cafe & Lounge. If someone in Alberta can argue it was them then surely this is just as debateable.

They actually do shaft competitions in Victoria so that is a fair argument. Wherever it was created, it is proudly Canadian and should be replacing redbull vodkas in your arsenal for years to come. Canada gave you Pam Anderson, the zipper, pop country music, insulin, the Titanic movie, The Weeknd, Biebs and now this… a country that keeps on giving.

Check out another unreal shot check out the Irish Car Bomb. Three odd ingredients that taste amazing combined together.

  1. They were invented in the Living Room on 17th Ave in Calgary, then a couple bartenders moved to Victoria and there it blew up.

  2. I left Victoria mid 2000’s and I have been trying to find the shaft shooter recipe for years!! This is the first time I’ve gotten results! They were our go-to first drink of the night at Hugos in the early/mid 2000’s.

  3. 5 stars
I drank many many many many of these when I went to visit my daughter in Victoria. The best place hands down, was some kinda Perogie place and second is Gerrick’s Head

  4. The Shaft Espresso Shot recipe sounds absolutely amazing! 😍 The combination of espresso and alcohol is a game-changer for those in need of a boost. It’s fantastic to have an alternative to the typical Redbull vodkas that avoids the crash and jitters. I can imagine this shot becoming a popular choice in Western Canada for those looking for an energy-packed night out. Can you share the recipe or any tips for making the perfect Shaft? I’m eager to give it a try! 🙌☕🥃
