Seven Falls Trail Hike Guide

To me there’s nothing better or more relaxing than a waterfall, let alone seven of them. Two hours from Phoenix and within Tucson city limits is another waterfall gem you have to go see!

This hike takes you criss-crossing seven times over the pretty Sabino Creek with some great fauna displaying nature at its finest along the way. The hike itself is long but pretty flat and it is very cool for kids with all of the neature you will see along the way!

You can reach Seven Falls from downtown Tucson in 20-30 minutes. and access the trailhead via the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area and the trail is called Bear Canyon Trail, FS #29.

Arriving at the parking lot there are great facilities for you to use the bathroom, stock up on water etc. After parking you can grab a map, ask the ranger any questions you may have an start your quest.

You will walk a carved out walkway up to a road where you have the option to pay to use a tram to get you to the official trailhead.

The Tram costs $4 and will cut your hike time down almost in half saving 3.5-4 miles. If you walk, you will walk a similar way as the road winds to the trailhead. The walk is still nice and not right along the road so don’t worry about that.

Once you get to the trailhead it is pretty easy with not a major incline or decline. Crossing the stream 7 times also is quite easy with lots of rocks and such in place to make sure you do not have a difficult time.

Once you get to the falls you can even walk up past the main pool where most people will wade and see another pool with often no one else there.

The water is pretty dark but still beautiful in its own right as it isn’t dirty. The color comes from tannins in the oaks on Mt. Lemmon. It truly is a unique and pretty brown hue.

  • Beautiful hike ending with a unique payoff right in our backyard.

Cons

  • It is a very popular hike within Tucson so it can be very busy in peak times.
  • The water is pretty dark but still beautiful in its own right as it isn’t dirty. The color comes from tannins in the oaks on Mt. Lemmon. It truly is a unique and pretty brown hue.
  • Not dog friendly.

Tips

  • Depending when you go, the creek can be high so you may have to get wet. Thus, bring water shoes, quick-drying shoes or hiking sandals and ideally shorts.
  • Late winter or early spring is when the falls are flowing their hardest but they are still nice year-round.
  • It is very hot in the summer months so be prepared with plenty of water and snacks.
  • The formal name for this canyon is Bear Canyon Trail, FS #29.
  • Parking is $5.
  • There is a tram that costs $4, which will give you a ride up to the main trailhead which cuts the hike down significantly by 3.5-4 miles.
